Learn how to measure your waist, choose the right width, and select the best Occidental Leather belt for all-day comfort and tool support.
Quick Answer
For a leather work belt, measure your pant waist size and choose a belt width that matches your tool load: 2" for light setups, 3" for daily framing, and 5" for heavy all-day support.
Width vs. Load Trade-off
A wider belt spreads weight better but can feel stiff until broken in. A narrower belt is more flexible and low-profile but may not support heavy pouches as comfortably. Consider how much gear you carry daily before choosing width.
Leather Break-In Period
All new leather work belts require a break-in period. Expect 1–2 weeks of daily wear before the leather conforms to your hips and the buckle loosens to your preferred notch. Do not size down expecting stretch—leather work belts hold their shape.
How to Choose Your Belt Size
- Measure Your Pant Waist: Use a soft tape measure around your waist where you normally wear your belt (usually just above the hip bones). That number in inches is your pant waist size. Do not add inches—Occidental belts are sized to match your pant waist. Write down your exact pant waist measurement before ordering.
- Match Width to Tool Load: 2" belt: light pouches or occasional carry. 3" belt: daily framing, electrical, or plumbing loads. 5" belt: heavy all-day loads with multiple pouches and accessories.
- Consider Your Body Shape: If you have a straight waist (little difference between waist and hips), a 3" or 5" belt may ride up. A 2" belt or using suspender attachment loops (available on the Stronghold Comfort Belt) can help keep everything in place. For heavier loads, suspender loops improve comfort and prevent sagging.
Product Facts
- HD 3" Ranger Leather Work Belt: The HD 3" Ranger Leather Work Belt is 3" wide and made from 12–14 oz. Bridle leather. The 3" width distributes tool and fastener bag weight across the lower back and hips, making it a solid choice for daily framing or electrical work.

HD 3" Ranger Leather Work Belt - 2” Leather Work Belt: The 2" Leather Work Belt is made from premium 12–14 oz. Bridle leather and is slim at 2" wide. Its slim profile fits compact tool bag setups and works well for lighter duty or jobs where you prefer less bulk around your waist.

2” Leather Work Belt - Stronghold Comfort Belt: The Stronghold Comfort Belt is 5" wide with a padded wool liner and a 2" all-leather overbelt. The extra width and padding provide all-day support for heavier loads, and the overbelt secures your tool bags without digging into your hips.
